According to our neighbours at Ellura and speaking to our local plants we believe that this year we have only received about 60% of its normal annual rainfall https://rainfall.willyweather.com.au/sa/murraylands/sedan.html
With the limited rain, above average warm days and winds........ what we are seeing is that weeds appear to be the winners!.
To reduce competition and improve the chances for the native species to thrive, requires weed control. A some what laborious and at times expensive task but necessary. Across the 16:6 properties the primary focus has been on Boxthorn control. Currawong Sec 13 has been Onion Weed and Horehound. However in saying that a range of other weeds are being addresed in a more oportunistic way as the target weeds are being dispatched.
Our weed control is a long-term planned project, and where we can we shall involve neighbours and road sides (Regional approach) Follow up treatment is required to address the weed seed bank and where suitable ( Remembering the legal requirements on a Heritage Agreement) native species planted to replace weeds removed.
An onion weed infestation
For an insight into our professional support (NV Grant 2024-2025) see the attached map and report relating to one aspect of the weed control undertaken by Irongrass (Janet and Andrew) who are treuly awesome folk.
With this warmer weather, with weed growth we have also had some great native species emerge and flower as well reptiles are on the move again - active after their winter torpor.
